Dear Linguistics students,

Effective September 2008, the undergraduate B.A. program in General Linguistics will have new requirements. Please refer to the 2008-09 Undergraduate Calendar for the specific requirements:

SUMMARY OF CHANGES

1. New program name: Linguistics (from General Linguistics).

2. Many new course names and descriptions (but same course codes): e.g., LALS 3004 Syntax I (formerly Syntactic Theory), LALS 4002 Syntax II (formerly Advanced Syntax), LALS 3601 Language Processing and the Brain I (formerly Psycholinguistics).

3. New courses: e.g., LALS 2005 Linguistic Analysis I (replaces LALS 2003 Language Analysis), LALS 3005 Morphology, LALS 3801 Structure of a Specific Language.

4. More required Linguistics courses: e.g., for the Honours B.A., LALS 3505 (Semantics), LALS 4001 (Phonology II) and LALS 4002 (Syntax II) are all obligatory; 1.0 credit from LALS 4009 (Topics), LALS 4507 (Semantics II) and LALS 4601 (Language Processing and the Brain II) are required.

NEW OR OLD PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS?

1. If you entered the program before September 2008, you will stay with the OLD program unless you request to switch to the new one.

2. If you wish to switch to the NEW program, request a COPE (Change of Program Elements) anytime on or after May 2, 2008 through Carleton Central. ONCE YOU CHANGE TO THE NEW PROGRAM YOU CANNOT GO BACK TO THE OLD ONE.

3. ANY changes to your program (e.g., switching from general to honours BA, or ALS to Linguistics)

– made on or before May 1, 2008 will keep the OLD program requirements

– made on or after May 2, 2008 will adopt the NEW program requirements
