This Fall 2011/Winter 2012, our Modern Languages unit is offering a fourth “Language Less Commonly Taught”, Anishinaabemowin.

Literally meaning “the People’s Language”, Anishinaabemowin is a member of the Algonquian language family and is spoken with some variation by such tribes as: the Ojibwe, the Chippewa, and the Odawa.  The name of the language is often used interchangeably with the name of the tribe.

Spoken through much of what is now east-central Canada and a number of northern US states, Anishinaabemowin is the third most commonly spoken indigenous language in Canada after Cree and Inuktitut.
