It is with great sadness that the School of Linguistics and Language Studies shares the news of the recent passing of Douglas Ellis.

Dr. Ellis, an author of publications in Classics and Linguistics, was an Adjunct Research Professor with SLaLS.

Ellis taught Linguistics at the University of Toronto (1959 to 1963) and at McGill University (1963 to 1991). He was also co-founder of McGill University’s Department of Linguistics which he chaired for over a decade. Following his retirement, Ellis was appointed Professor Emeritus at McGill before joining SLaLS.

Spoken Cree III, the third textbook of a three-level Cree Language course developed by Ellis, was celebrated in SLaLS during its launch in 2016. The book was edited by Dr. Marie-Odile Junker with help from Assistant Editors Caitlyn Martinuzzi and Gabrielle Lacroix, both graduates of the Linguistics program.
