Jesse Laprade & JordanSinging in: Mandarin Chinese I’m a second year student in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies and my minor is Mandarin. I chose this minor because after finishing the first-year Mandarin course, I was hooked. I recently started the lower intermediate and directed my interest towards the different Dialects of China. To this day I still don’t know why I like languages so much. All I know is that, to me, they are like a never-ending puzzle or game. I started writing songs in highschool and have been continuing doing so up until today. I’ve only recently got into writing songs in a foreign language but for now, I’ve been keeping the songs at a slightly humorous level because I don’t know the full degree of emotion or seriousness in a lot of the words. Maybe, when I become more familiar with feeling of the language I’ll do so. |
English |
EvieSinging in: English Hello, this is Yunbo. If you like, you can call me Evie. I have been learning bel canto and Chinese folk singing in middle school. Although crazy about the music, I always afraid to stand on the stage to performance, so the application of the reason is that wish I can become more brave and challenge myself. I chose Nemo from Nightwish band which rock style fascinated me. Hope my voice will don’t let you down lol. |
The Blue CloverSinging in: English I’m Danyang Zhou, but I will be happy if you call me Jerry. I love music, all kinds of music. I can play the guitar and the bass guitar, I had a band when I still in China. And my favorite band, to be honest, is the Beatles. They are old but classic, I got a lot of inspirations when I listen to their music. I start my English studying when I was little, because my grandfather was a English teacher and I grew up with my grand parents. Although I’ve been studying English for years, and at that time, I never knew it will be so helpful today. An interesting fact about English is that, there are more English words begin with the letter ‘S’ than any other letter of the alphabet. My name is Kenny, I like singing and playing guitar. The language that I learn is English, the reason why I learn this language is because I have to learn it, if I didn’t learn English I cannot communicate with other people in Canada, and it’s also a very international and popular language. I like this language because compare to other languages, this language is very easy to learn. And the main reason is because that English is a very important skill to learn, if I don’t know how to say English, I cannot work or live in Canada, so I have to learn. And basically, I’m a nice person, and I love music. My name is Ken, and I’m currently an undergraduate in the Sprott School of Business. My favorite music instrument is guitar and yet I’m also passionate in singing. Thus, I’m very appreciated that this is a wonderful opportunity to present myself. I’ve been learning English since grade 1, and i knew that it will be a necessity for social networking as well as for singing indeed. My favourite artist is Michael Buble. |

She has loved seeing her improvement and growth in her second language, and has been pursuing it ever since. The song she will be playing is called “Comme Des Enfants” by Coeur de Pirate. It has been one of her favourite French songs, as it was the first to help her fully understand some common French idioms. It was the first time she felt like she was a part of the language rather than simply reciting it. |

Avina ZainuriSinging in: Japanese My name is Avina Zainuri and I am 21 years old. Ever since I was little, I have been travelling across parts of the world with my family thanks to my mother’s occupation. That is also how I am able to study at Carleton at the moment. I have been around Europe, Australia, North America and South East Asia though I never really been around Eastern Asia, despite being interested in their culture. So I attempted to learn Mandarin back in High School, but it was to no avail. After one semester I forgot everything completely! So I attempted it another language and so far it seems to working much better for me. By now, including English and my native language, I speak a total of 3 languages, and I am currently learning a fourth one, Japanese. I am planning to go there in the future with my friends, and if my bank account permits, I want to take my entire family with me. |

Russian |
Skander BelouizdadSinging in: Russian I (Skander) was born in Algeria and raised in the United Arab Emirates before immigrating to Canada in 2007. I’m a political science student with a focus on IR. My diverse background means I speak three languages, and that privilege has allowed me to be able be passionate about language as a whole. I also consider myself a Russophile, which is what especially drives me to study Russian. I’ve always appreciated Russian music (which kind of makes me weird,) and so, this event came as the golden opportunity to try something new (performing) while doing something I enjoy. |

I chose Russian as my minor because I enjoy learning languages and am interested in Russian history and culture. I am also taking as many music electives as possible, as music has always been a passion of mine. I can play guitar, bass guitar and flute, and I intend to learn piano at some point. I recently started considering myself a singer as well, but I’m not quite as confident about it. Hopefully, participating in Linguavision will boost my confidence in both my singing and Russian-speaking abilities. When I’m not doing work, I can most often be found playing music or video games, but I also read books and draw from time to time. |

His musical inspiration comes from a combination of the Barenaked Ladies, Stompin’ Tom Connors and Chumbawamba. |
