Current Program: PhD in ALDS
I am a part-time doctoral candidate in ALDS (under supervision of Dr. Guillaume Gentil) and full-time faculty at Algonquin College Language Institute, where I teach in and coordinate the Teachers of English as a Second/Foreign Language program. I hold the OCELT accreditation from TESL Ontario, and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from York University. I have been an Adult ESL teacher in Canada and internationally, having taught in various contexts and programs, including the private sector, LINC, and college- and university-based English for Academic Purposes (EAP). It is my experience in EAP over the past 15 years that has brought me to Carleton, where I am about to begin data collection for my doctoral project on the effect of teaching complex noun phrases on EAP students’ reading comprehension. My previous research has been on first language attrition, bilingual and heritage language education, and teacher training in online synchronous environments, published in Language Learning and Technology, Canadian Journal of Applied Linguistics, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, and Journal for the Education of the Gifted. At work, I am involved in implementing Blend-Sync (blended synchronous) teaching approaches, in which capacity I was finalist for Capital Educator Awards in 2013 , and received a special mention from the International E-Learning Association in 2013 and 2016 for projects related to teaching in blended synchronous and virtual learning environments. I sit on TESL Canada Board as Chair of Standards.
