SOWK 2301 WORKING WITH CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Preventative and protective social work intervention with children and youth. Issues addressed include child neglect, abuse and violence in the context of family; organizational mandate and social political contexts. Programs and services for children and youth.

  • Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must hold an MSW (or related) degree.
  • Required Professional Qualifications and Skills: Expertise in direct intervention with child protection practice and work with children and youth.
  • Teaching Competence: Candidates are required to have experience teaching social work courses and must be prepared to teach in person and/or use Brightspace, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and other web-based teaching platforms.
  • Other Relevant Experience: Candidates must have demonstrated significant work experience in direct social work practice with children and youth and child protection.

Pursuant to Article 16 of the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 Collective Agreement, applications are invited from members of the CUPE 4600-2 bargaining unit and other interested persons to teach the following School of Social Work courses during the 2024 Summer Term.

Please note that, while we do our best to determine mode of delivery well in advance of the term, the decision of whether to offer a course in person or online rests with the University and is subject to change.

Summer 2024 Courses:

SOWK 1002 Introduction to Social Work (0.5) Summer Session (July-August) Core Course

Introduction to the profession of social work; evolution of the social work profession in Canada; social work knowledge, values and skills. Explores professional and regulatory social work bodies and international linkages.

  • Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must hold an MSW (or related) degree.
  • Required Professional Qualifications and Skills: Minimum three years post MSW experience working in social work practice.
  • Teaching Competence: Candidates are required to have experience teaching social policy courses in social work or other social science disciplines and must be prepared to use Brightspace, Zoom and other web-based teaching platforms.
  • Other Relevant Experience: Management ability to coordinate and communicate with a team of Teaching Assistants, to manage a large class of students, and familiarity with on-line and distance education.

SOWK 3002 Introduction to Statistical Analysis in Social Work (0.5 credit) Summer Session (July-August) Core & Elective Course

Fundamentals of statistical analysis; descriptive and inferential statistics and their use in social work research. Statistical tests including Chi-Square, t-tests, correlations and simple linear regressions.

  • Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must hold an MSW (or related) degree.
  • Required Professional Qualifications and Skills: Experience conducting and coordinating both quantitative and qualitative social work or related research. Demonstrate expertise and production of research using statistical methods.
  • Teaching Competence: Candidates are required to have experience teaching social work courses and must be prepared to use Brightspace, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and other web-based teaching platforms.
  • Other Relevant Experience: Candidate will have demonstrated work experience conducting research using statistics. Experience working with statistical software (e.g. SPSS, JASP).

SOWK 4301/5702 Racialization and Social Work (0.5 credit) Spring Session (May- June) Core & Elective Course

Social work and racialization; racism and consequences; critical analysis of cultural formations, difference, and identities; critical examination of whiteness and privilege.  Cross-listed at the undergraduate/graduate level.

  • Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must hold an MSW (or related) degree.
  • Required Professional Qualifications and Skills: Minimum three years post-MSW experience working as a social worker with people from diverse ethnic, cultural, and racialized communities.
  • Teaching Competence: Candidates are required to have experience teaching social work courses and practice skills focusing on diversity and inclusion. Must be prepared to use Brightspace, Zoom and other web-based teaching platforms.
  • Other Relevant Experience: Candidates must have demonstrated knowledge of anti-racist social work practice, theorization of racialization, diversities, and intersectionalities.
