Welcome to the School of Social Work.

I am so grateful to work at the School of Social Work.  Not only do I have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of passionate educators and staff, but every year our classrooms overflow with the ideas and experiences of social work students.  Across the School, students, staff and faculty work to reimagine and recreate social work education and the profession itself.

This is an exciting time at the School.  Our physical space is changing with new murals and we are learning to teach and learn remotely when required.  We are welcoming new faculty members and are being enriched by their scholarship.  Students, staff and faculty are building inclusive and transformative approaches to social work whether in policy, community or in clinical practice.

The School of Social Work at Carleton was one of the founders of the structural social work.  From that foundational commitment to social justice, we now work with a variety of critical approaches that attend to structural relations and their impact on people’s lives.  Our faculty are busy researching ways to practice social work that emerge from Indigenous ways of knowing; they are reimagining long-term care; enriching clinical social work practice; exploring trauma-informed approaches to resettlement; invigorating social work education; exploring ageing friendly communities and caregivers’ experiences. All of these research areas and more are challenging the profession to work in new and innovative ways.

Our programs offer students the opportunity to focus their education on key areas of interest.  Their studies begin in the classroom and then move out into the community under the supervision of a practitioner. Our graduates hold a range of positions, some working as clinical practitioners, others as community developers and still others in policy analysis for the government or non-profits.

Please look around our website and learn more about our faculty, staff, contract instructors, programs and courses.  If you have any questions or are looking for more information, please contact us as we would be happy to talk to you further.
