Spring/Summer 2024

Application deadline date:   January 31, 2024 (electronic application is listed after the course information)

Pursuant to Article 16 of the CUPE 4600 Unit 2 Collective Agreement, applications are invited from members of the CUPE 4600-2 bargaining unit and other interested persons to teach the following School of Social Work courses during the 2024 Summer Term.

Please note that, while we do our best to determine mode of delivery well in advance of the term, the decision of whether to offer a course in person or online rests with the University and is subject to change.

For Summer 2024, the following SSW Field courses will be offered:

  • SOWK 4600/4601 BSW Field Practicum II Supervision
  • SOWK 5606/5607 MSW Field Practicum II Supervision

Please note that the University may require all or part of this course to be delivered in person or remotely.

Required Academic Qualifications and Skills: Candidates must hold an MSW degree from an accredited school and be a Registered Social Worker (RSW) in Ontario.

Required Professional Qualifications and Skills:
Expertise in social work practice with individuals and families, communities, research, policy and/or advocacy.

Teaching Competence:
Candidates are required to have experience teaching social work practice.

Training and Orientation:
Candidates must be willing to engage in limited one-on-one orientation with the relevant Practicum Coordinator and to use university supports and resources to develop skill and ability to use related learning technology (i.e., Brightspace LMS platform, cuPortfolio platform, etc.). Significant self-directed learning is needed when occupying this role for the first time.  In addition, candidates must be willing to attend the scheduled Faculty Liaison meetings that occur once per placement term at the School of Social Work.

Email communication:  Successful candidates will be provided with a Carleton email address which is the only email address to be used with assigned placement students and Field Supervisors. Carleton email servers are secure and compliant with student and agency privacy needs.

Response times:  For the duration of the contract, Faculty Liaisons are expected to respond to all field related emails within 24 to 48 business hours and to be physically accessible to their field team (e.g., students and Field Supervisor) within 24 to 48 business hours in the event of an emergency. Please note that practicums continue during university reading weeks and thus faculty liaison availability is required during that week as outlined above.

Group size: Maximum group size for seminars will vary, as follows:

SOWK 4600/01                 15 students

SOWK 5606/07                  15 students

Core Functions:  Faculty Liaisons are expected to complete at least one on-site consultation meeting with Field Supervisors and students, and a minimum of one telephone consultation (mid-point) per placement. In addition, Faculty Liaisons are expected to hold additional consultations with agencies where significant issues are arising on the placement and where agencies request them to do so.

Faculty Liaisons are expected to facilitate six (6) seminars, manage and assess all practicum assignments, coordinate and oversee evaluation processes and submit the final grade for placement to Practicum Coordinators at the end of the placement term. Facilitation may also include oversight of students engaging in the Practicum Learning Portal (PLP) on Brightspace, as well as providing supplemental clinical supervision to students who are being supervised by a Registered Psychotherapist. In these relatively rare situations, this will entail 3 sessions of group supervision involving the Field Instructor and student(s). This clinical supervision will occur during the placement, in order to establish clinical input from a social work perspective.

Faculty Liaisons are responsible for supporting students to obtain letters of completion and letters of eligibility relative to professional registration at the end of their degrees, and for assessing final evaluations and portfolios.

Vacation Leave Requests: Limited absences for vacation or personal reasons (up to 10 days) will be considered provided:

  • The Faculty Liaison Is fully available to respond to students at the beginning and end of the placement term, an approximate 2 to 4-week period that may vary depending on the level of seminar group assigned.
  • The vacation leave does not conflict with scheduled field seminars.
  • The Faculty Liaison is able to present a plan for how they will meet the requirements of the position as outlined here and meet the needs of students during the absence. This may include:
    • Availability by email (24 to 48-hour response time).
