We’re officially one month into Carleton’s first fall term using Brightspace by D2L. This month’s LMS update will bring you up to speed on changes to the classlist in Brightspace, embedding Zoom recordings and the latest features.
- Classlist page is moving to the Course Admin panel
After consultation with the Carleton Privacy Office, the Classlist page will be removed from student view in the Tools menu in all Brightspace courses as of Oct. 12 to safeguard student data. Instructors and teaching assistants can continue using the Classlist page from the Course Admin area, accessed via the Brightspace navbar. Students, however, cannot access the Course Admin page and will no longer have access to the Classlist page. Instructors are encouraged to set up alternative methods of student communication in their courses, such as Discussions or Zoom rooms to foster student-to-student communication. For assistance with setting up communications in your course, please request a course consultation or reach out to Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) via the Support Portal.
- Zoom cloud recordings automatically upload to Kaltura Mediaspace for quicker embedding in Brightspace
Recording, accessing and embedding your Zoom meetings just got a lot easier. When Zoom users are logged in with their Carleton credentials and record their meetings to the cloud, those recordings will appear in the user’s Kaltura Mediaspace account. Kaltura Mediaspace is Carleton’s media server and is directly integrated into Brightspace. Zoom/Kaltura Recordings can be quickly embedded in Brightspace for easy sharing in a course. Kaltura Mediaspace offers several advantages over recording to the Zoom cloud, including storing recordings for at least four years vs. Zoom’s autodeletion of cloud recordings after 120 days. Learn more on the Zoom-Kaltura Integration page.
- D2L updates Brightspace monthly with new features and settings
One of the many benefits of Brightspace is that D2L updates the system with new features and improvements monthly without any system outage. For example, did you know that as of September, Brightspace users can indicate their preferred pronouns in their user profile or that assignments can now be setup for submission of only specific file types? Check out these summaries from September, and see the latest D2L release changes on the What’s New with Brightspace? page. Each month’s updates get posted around the second week of the month.
TLS is here to support you. If you have questions about your course in Brightspace, or want training or advice on how to use any of Carleton’s supported educational technology tools, request a course consultation or submit a request to the TLS Support Portal. TLS also has regular Brightspace Drop-ins and workshops scheduled throughout October for all your course questions.
