Orientation and Onboarding

New Casual Employees

After you accept your offer, your manager will be in touch to welcome you to the team. You can confirm first day information and logistics (office location, start time, dress code, what to bring, etc.) directly with them.

On your first day, you will receive a department orientation (workstation information, team introduction, and department overview) from your new manager and team. Over the next few weeks and months, they will also be supporting your overall onboarding process to ensure you are successful in your new role!

Additional onboarding activities (designated as part of Carleton’s Onboarding timeline) can be found below.

HR Orientation Session

We will contact you with the specific date and time of your orientation session—in most cases, it will be the Monday of or prior to your first day of work. This orientation session is hosted by a member of our Talent Acquisition team and serves as an opportunity to meet other new hires while learning about various departments, services, and resources on campus. We also review mandatory training requirements, campus safety, and other important information to help you get started at Carleton.

Due to COVID-19, we are currently conducting all orientations virtually.

Mandatory Training

Carleton staff and faculty are required to take a number of mandatory training courses on the following topics:

Carleton Compass

Carleton Compass is a new program developed by Healthy Workplace and the Office of Quality Initiatives, and seeks to pair all new hires with a Navigator

Navigators are enthusiastic ambassadors of Carleton University who welcome and assist new colleagues in learning the Carleton culture in an informal setting, share information about Carleton’s facilities and resources, encourage their new co-workers to take advantage of services, and contribute to a sense of belonging.  The Navigator’s perspective provides a customized “inside look” at Carleton and their favourite spots and “hidden gems” on campus. They will become a familiar face for the new employee and a resource they can turn to with questions.

Building on the existing Healthy Workplace culture, the Carleton Compass will create a sense of inclusion and belonging in the new employee, as well as allow existing Carleton faculty and staff the chance to share their institutional knowledge and experience with others by participating as Navigators, further strengthening their Carleton pride.

If you are a new hire at Carleton, your Navigator should be reaching out to you shortly after your hire date!
