In compliance with Ontario’s Essential Services Order, Senate met remotely on April 22, 2022. Here are the highlights:
2022-23 Operating Budget Presentation
Senate received a presentation on the proposed 2022/23 Operating Budget, scheduled for approval at the April 28 Board of Governor’s meeting. The budget is balanced with total revenues and expenses of $521 million. Provost Jerry Tomberlin emphasized that looking ahead, it will be essential to maintain financial flexibility in response to pandemic-related events, while also ensuring the University is set up for continued success following the public health crisis.
New BSc Program
Following recommendations from the Faculty Board and Senate Quality Assurance and Planning Committee (SQAPC), Senate approved the introduction of the 15.0 credit BSc program in Physics, effective Fall 2023.
Marshal of Convocation Duties – June 2022
Senate approved the designation of Professor Donald Russell and Professor Betina Appel Kuzmarov as alternate Marshals of Convocation to assist Clerk of Senate Elinor Sloan in this year’s graduation ceremonies, June 13- 24, 2022, as needed.
Special Appointments to Senate – Recommendations
Senate approved the nominations of Kim Hellemans as Senate COU Academic Colleague and Margaret Haines as Senate Alumni Representative for Board approval.
Once ratified by the Board of Governors, each three-year term of service will begin July 1, 2022.
Senate Committees Welcome New Members
Senate ratified 21 new committee appointments for terms of service beginning July 1, 2022.
Senator Spotlight: Siva Sivathayalan
Dr. Siva Sivathayalan is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, Director of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering, and Associate Chair of Graduate Studies in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University. His research interests include the static and dynamic behaviour of soils, liquefaction, laboratory testing, constitutive relations, and geosynthetics. Learn more about Siva.
