Senate met on September 23, 2022. Here are the highlights:
Welcome New Senators
The first Senate meeting of the 2022/23 Academic Year was a momentous occasion, ushering in the long-awaited resumption of in-person meetings and welcoming 24 new Senators to the highest academic body at Carleton.
New Undergraduate Awards
The Senate Committee on Undergraduate Student Awards reviewed and approved the terms of reference for 32 new undergraduate scholarships and bursaries.
Changes to the Academic Governance of the University (AGU)
A comprehensive review of the AGU was undertaken by the Senate Academic Governance Committee with the goal of updating the document and improving clarity.
The AGU is a joint policy document of the Board of Governors and the Senate of Carleton University and is one of the foundational governance documents for Senate. The AGU defines aspects of Senate’s governing framework including Senate membership, meeting procedures, committees, policies and faculty boards.
The Senate-approved changes will be shared with the Board of Governors for final approval.
Quality Assurance & Cyclical Reviews
Senate approved the Final Assessment Reports and Executive Summaries arising from the Cyclical Reviews of the following programs:
- Undergraduate Programs in BIT Optical Systems and Sensors
- Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management
- Graduate programs in Health: Science, Technology and Policy
Strategic Integrated Plan (SIP) Implementation Report
Over the last year, the university has continued to make great progress across all three of the SIP’s strategic directions. The President highlighted significant progress across several key areas including: student retention, research funding and impact, innovation in teaching and pedagogy, community engagement, mental health and wellness, sustainability, Indigenous initiatives, as well as equity, diversity and inclusion. The President’s Annual Report 2022 attempts to capture some of these highlights.
Senate Committees Annual Reports
Senate received several committee annual reports for information. These included updates from the Senate Library Committee, Senate Student Academic Integrity Appeal Committee, Senate Undergraduate Studies Committee, and Senate Committee on Undergraduate Student Awards.
Senator Spotlight: Shazia Sadaf
Shazia Sadaf is an Instructor at Carleton’s Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies. Her teaching encourages critical engagement and is broadly driven by the belief that the study of world literatures is an effective tool for bridging the global divide between cultures and ideologies and can be a catalyst for positive change. The next Senate meeting will be held on October 21, 2022 at 2 pm, and will include a Closed Session to approve the Fall graduation list.
