Location:481 Future Learning Lab (4th Floor of the Library) and online

Carleton University is renowned for its commitment to inclusivity and equal access for all students, especially those with disabilities. Since 1990, the Paul Menton Centre (PMC) has been a cornerstone of support, coordinating academic accommodations for students with disabilities. However, as the need for accommodations has increased in complexity, it’s clear that a new approach is necessary to ensure sustainable and inclusive education for all.

In this workshop, Associate Professor Mako Hirotani, a leading expert in Psycholinguistics, will present illuminating the expectations of students, particularly those with disabilities, shedding light on the barriers they face in the modern classroom. Mako’s presentation will help you better understand how you can reshape traditional course design and teaching approaches to reduce the need for accommodations and enhance accessibility for every student.

Laura Brawn and Hunter Calder from the PMC will also be on hand to demystify Carleton’s accommodation process and share best practices. They will provide valuable insights to streamline the accommodation experience for students, ensuring they receive the support they need without unnecessary hurdles.

At the completion of this session, participants will learn to:

  • Identify the diverse needs and expectations of students, particularly those with disabilities, in the modern classroom.
  • Apply Carleton University’s accommodation process and best practices for supporting students with disabilities.
  • Reshape course design and teaching approaches to reduce barriers and to enhance accessibility for all students using different strategies.
  • Develop skills to create a more inclusive learning environment that supports the needs of all students, regardless of ability or background.
  • Advocate for and implement accessibility solutions in your courses, contributing to a more inclusive educational experience for all.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of the change. Join us for a transformative workshop led by esteemed speakers at the forefront of accessibility advocacy. This workshop promises to empower you to create a more inclusive learning environment in your course for all students.
