Foundations of Multiple-Choice Testing

Multiple-Choice (MC) testing is one of the most commonly used forms of assessment in a university setting. In particular, large introductory classes typically reflect courses that cover a broad landscape of learning and necessitate assessment formats that are efficient and reliable, making MC tests a good option.
In this first workshop, we will introduce the foundations of multiple-choice testing to help you gain knowledge and develop skills in writing and refining multiple-choice questions and tests. You will be exposed to, and gain an awareness of the foundational information related to:
- Advantages and challenges of Multiple-Choice tests
- Best practices in MC question writing
- Common question construction errors (and how to avoid them)
- Strategies for testing more complex cognitive processes
- Test Blueprint design
- Using Item Analysis to refine and enhance your tests
- Utilizing MC tests beyond assessment
To apply the knowledge and practice the skills you will learn in this workshop, we strongly encourage you to also attend the second part of the workshop titled Applying Principles of Multiple-Choice Testing offered on the same day, where you will have a chance to work hands-on on analyzing, improving, and transitioning your multiple-choice questions, as well as performing item analysis to refine and enhance your tests.
This session is intended for all participants who are involved in designing learning experiences, in any delivery format.
