Grading Rubrics Retreat

June 18, 2024 at 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Location:252B MacOdrum Library
Cost:Free

Rubrics are a centrepiece of any good assessment practice because they increase transparency and allow for more consistent scoring of student performances. For assessors, too, they can significantly speed up the marking process, especially if you choose to mark assignments on Brightspace. But designing a good rubric in Brightspace is also a challenge that requires a strong mix of theoretical and technical skills.

This half-day retreat is designed to provide you with precisely those skills. Over the course of its two parts, this session will introduce you to the fundamentals of designing rubrics as well as of building them in Brightspace.

  • Part 1 (10 a.m. – noon): The morning component will focus on clarifying the fundamental principles of rubrics—what they are and aren’t, and how we create them. After this part of the retreat, participants will be able to:
    • Define and differentiate between holistic and analytic rubrics
    • Describe the steps involved in creating an analytic rubric
    • Practice creating a sample analytical rubric
  • Part 2 (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.): The afternoon component will focus on the practical knowledge and steps involved in building a rubric in Brightspace. After this part of the retreat, participants will be able to:
    • Explain how to add/delete criteria, criteria groupings, and performance descriptors, and how to change weightings
    • Describe how to link rubrics with existing assessments
    • Practice (re)creating a sample analytic rubric in Brightspace

Our goal is that you will leave this workshop with the knowledge and disposition required to begin creating rubrics of your own that you can use in Brightspace or not.

This session is intended for all participants who are involved in designing learning experiences, in any delivery format.
