The “Spotlight on AI” series features speakers from across Carleton’s teaching community talking about the innovative ways that they are responding the challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI). These faculty-led sessions are meant to be informal spaces where colleagues can share and discuss ideas with each other.

In this session, Don Myles (School of Linguistics and Language Studies) and Julie McCarrol (School of LInguistics and Language Studies) will explore our reality as we attempt to update or reimagine assignments in the AI era, drawing from research on best practices. This presentation originates from an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) meeting discussing how to assess academic writing in an online EAP course. Dr. McCarrol will then discuss how she updated her assessments to respond to or address the students’ use of AI., as well as with her firsthand insights into the realities of teaching EAP online amidst the AI revolution. In the workshop portion of this talk, faculty will have the opportunity to discuss their assignments and receive feedback and support from their colleagues and the presenters.
