Spotlight on Experiential Learning: Instructor panel with the Book Arts Lab

Explore the possibilities for designing interactive learning experiences for your students with Master Printer Larry Thompson and the printing presses at the Book Arts Lab, your new favourite resource for experiential learning.
Instructor panelists include:
- Marc Saurette (History/MEMS) encourages his students to get their hands on history with the help of the MacOdrum Library. For the past few years, Marc has taught courses on how to handle, read, and display the medieval manuscripts in the collections of the Archives and Special Collections as well as those of the Carleton University Art Gallery. In years past, he and his students have put together in person and online exhibits of our medieval materials to showcase student learning. This year, students have been working in the Book Arts Lab to replicate the work of medieval scribes, seeking to create handmade facsimiles of manuscript folios in Carleton’s collections. This experiential learning reinforces the learning done in seminars to emphasize the nature of medieval books.
- Sonja Meiling Falconer Peters (she/her), Alumnus (English Language and Literature). During her studies at Carleton, Sonja’s research interests included interracial communication and BIPOC representation in YA literature and media geared towards youth. Now that she has graduated, she is hoping to pursue a career aiding Canadian immigrants and refugees in Canada and continue her education at a post-graduate level. In this symposium, she will be presenting her book art project that she created in a class directed by Larry Thompson, the MacOdrum Library’s Master Printer. Sonja will discuss the book’s concept and its execution, and the challenges related to a book art type project and the importance of experiential learning (especially) during pandemic times in pedagogy and academia.

This session is part of Teaching and Learning Services’ (TLS) Experiential Learning Virtual Showcase, running all week November 8 to 12, 9am-3pm.
