Dr. Joy Mighty took up her duties as Carleton’s Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) on November 1, 2012.
She brings a great deal of experience to Carleton, coming from Queen’s University, where she served as the director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning and a professor in the School of Business. Prior to her work at Queen’s, she was the co-ordinator of the Teaching and Learning Centre and an associate professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of New Brunswick. She has received awards for excellence in teaching, research, and extraordinary service and professional leadership.
Dr. Mighty is also the Past-President of the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE), was the inaugural chair of the Educational Developers Caucus and, for three consecutive years, represented Canada on the Council of the International Consortium for Educational Development.
Born in Guyana, Dr. Mighty received a BA, Dip. Ed., and MA in Education from the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, an MBA from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and a PhD in Organizational Behaviour from York University in Toronto. Her areas of research expertise include diversity, equity and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
In addition to her AVP position, Dr. Mighty holds an academic cross-appointment in the Pauline Jewett Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Sprott School of Business.
