CDF Workshop: Designing Learning Experiences from Scratch

May 13, 2024 at 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Location:481 Future Learning Lab (4th floor), MacOdrum Library
Cost:Free

Designing effective learning experiences that prioritize student-centred outcomes requires a solid foundation in course design fundamentals rooted in pedagogical principles.

In this first Course Design Fundamentals workshop, we introduce a teaching framework and pedagogical strategies aimed at helping you begin designing a learning module from scratch. We promote the purposeful design approach that considers learning to be a complex journey without losing sight of the interrelationships between the required elements (van Merrienboer and Kirschner, 2017).

Participants collaborate to create a learning module that incorporates recognition of prerequisite skills and learning outcomes aligned with both instructional strategies and assessment processes. Upon completion, each group presents its design to the entire cohort, and feedback is provided by both peers and facilitators.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

  • Explain the importance of alignment among learning outcomes, assessments, grading instruments and learning activities
  • Write simple examples of learning prerequisites, learning outcomes, teaching and learning strategies and grading rubrics
  • Begin designing student-centred learning experiences

The primary target audience is faculty/instructors with little to no experience in course design; however, we welcome participants with varying levels of teaching experience, including both contract and full-time faculty, as well as internal staff members responsible for designing and delivering different learning experiences such as librarians, lab instructors, and institutional trainers.

Space is limited. Please register in advance by filling out the form below.

This is part of Course Design Fundamentals, offered by TLS. Participants who complete five workshops and a guided reflection of the experience will receive a letter of completion to include in their teaching dossier. To enrol in the CDF program, please complete this form and register for the workshops here.

“The journey through these (CDF) workshops has been transformative, reshaping my educational approach in profound ways. The insights I’ve gained have not only helped me become a better educator but have also changed how I think about teaching effectively. As I step into each classroom, I am prepared with strategies that empower students to become active participants in their learning journey.” (CDF program participant)
