Please read this page before applying to I-CUREUS.

Applications for Summer 2024 I-CUREUS projects are available starting April 5th, we will continue to accept applications until there is no more available funding for the Summer term.

If you are a student interested in participating in the I-CUREUS program, you are encouraged to speak with your professors to discuss your interest and options, or ask your department’s administrators, chair or dean for further information. Finding a supervisor can be challenging, so please feel welcome to ask for help, by emailing icureus@carleton.ca, or through another campus resource like the Science Student Success Centre, Career Services, your Faculty office, or Student Society! The Future Learning Lab cannot match students to Faculty.

If you have found a faculty member you are interested in working with, you can contact them and let them know about your interest in I-CUREUS. You may also browse your department’s or faculty’s website and look at the research faculty are working on. Then you can contact the researchers that you would like to work with.

If you are an interested Faculty member, you are encouraged to identify an undergraduate student you feel you can collaborate with. This may be a student who has successfully completed a course you have taught, a student you have worked with before or a student who has expressed interest in collaborating with you. TLS will not vet or select student interns – this is the sole responsibility of the instructors.

Once you have found an interested student or Faculty supervisor, you will both need to review the information on this website. You will need to review the Acknowledgement of Understanding, as well as complete the online application form in collaboration with one and other. You only need to submit one application form per project.

Application Timing

Applications for I-CUREUS open each term. You may apply for a project in the Summer term, the Fall term, the Fall and Winter terms (called Fall-Winter), or the Winter term. Your project must be completed in the term specified on your application.

Projects must be at least 8 weeks in duration.

Generally, applications open one month before the start of a new term, and remain open until the program has reached capacity for that term, or until the last Monday before the Reading Break (not the Monday of Reading Break). If the program reaches capacity before this, the applications will be closed until the next term.

The Application Process

You do not need a research proposal to apply to I-CUREUS. The application form will ask you for a description of the project. Use this space to discuss the specific research topic and goal, the student’s role in the research, the benefits to student, and any details you deem relevant. If your project requires, you will need to outline your approved research ethics clearance.

All hours must be completed, and your capstone submitted before the end of the term specified in your application. Supervisors and students must notify the Future Learning Lab immediately of any changes to the terms provided in the application form. You will be asked to provide Start and End dates, an approximate number of hours per week, as well as the total number of weeks. This information will be used for payment purposes, please be as accurate as you are able, and notify the Future Learning Lab of any changes at icureus@carleton.ca.

Faculty supervisors must ensure the availability of appropriate funds to cover their half of the student’s wages.

Both intern and supervisor will need to review the information on this website. You will need to review the Acknowledgement of Understanding, as well as complete the online application form together.

Applications are typically processed and reviewed within 10-12 business days, but may take longer if high numbers of applications are submitted.

Selection Criteria

Faculty members and student applicants should complete the online application together, or in consultation with one another. Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Appropriateness of the proposed research work: what methodologies and activities will the student employ?
  • The level of supervision and mentorship from the faculty supervisor: how will the student be supported in their research?
  • Potential output, such as research papers, but primarily the student’s Capstone: can the student present this work as a standalone project? If not, can they produce a capstone? Will the student feel ownership of some of this work?
  • Anticipated learning outcomes for the student from the internship: what new skills or competencies will the student gain?

I-CUREUS positions will be awarded to eligible projects in a timely manner on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are limited Internships available and applications are not guaranteed to be accepted. Do not begin work on a project that has not yet been approved.

Please note, that a Faculty supervisor may not supervise more than two students concurrently. A student may not participate in multiple SaPP or I-CUREUS projects concurrently. Priority may be given to students who have not yet participated in an I-CUREUS project in the academic year. The academic year runs from May – April.
