Grade schemes allow you to customize how levels of achievement are displayed to students in the gradebook. You can use the default scheme (Percentage), or select a custom scheme.

What is a Grade Scheme?

A grade scheme enables you to organize students’ performances on grade items into levels of achievement. A grade scheme can include any number of achievement levels. Each achievement level has its own range of acceptable grades and a symbol, such as a numeric value, letter, or text description, to represent it. You can set up grade schemes in the Setup Wizard or on the Schemes page of your gradebook.

Grade Scheme Options

The Schemes tab of your gradebook displays the available grade scheme options in D2L Brightspace.  You can add new grade schemes or change the default scheme at any time. The default scheme is Percentage.

Applying a Grade Scheme to an individual grade item or “Final Calculated Grade”

  1. Log in to Brightspace using your MyCarletonOne credentials. 
  2. On the Brightspace homepage, locate your course in one of the following ways:
      • Click on the course tile under the My Courses widget.
      • Click the Course Selector Grid  and select the course from the drop-down menu. If you are enrolled in more than 20 courses, you can search for the course name using the search bar.
  3. In the navbar, click Progress.
  4. In the drop-down menu, select Grades. 
  5. Click the Manage Grades tab. 
  6. Click the grade item you want to apply a grade scheme to.
  7. Under Grading, select a grade scheme from the Grade Scheme drop-down menu.
  8. Click Save and Close to return to Manage Grades.
